Now, the bad news: this killer desert stage will not show up in the Xbox or GameCube versions of the game, and neither will two other PS2 levels (mirrored and reversed courses feature in as substitutes, and we're told that reverse modes play quite different, but it's still a loss.) Since these other consoles were afterthoughts for production, they're running behind Sony's console and were not able to spec out these stages (which were late additions for the PS2 rev, made while the wholly different development team was still getting the Xbox and Cube ports up to run.) On the other hand, the Xbox and GameCube games have the benefit of the dev team knowing all the little mistakes made in the PS2 version (little nags that the testers comment on while running through mostly-finished copies.) The big change in gameplay for these versions will be a much better cop monitoring system. There's also lots of neat little inclusions in the stage, which featured tumbleweeds drifting across the road, cactuses to smash, and one sequence where you go leaping through a break-away billboard. One pass behind a waterfall and then over a small leap that passed away from the main track showed how especially helpful these shortcuts would be in losing helicopter cops. This desert stage helped to show off the extent of maneuvers that racers will have to take in order to escape the fuzz - ducking into caves or around narrow mountain passes will not only help ditch the other racers, but also will help ditch the cops on your tail. We got a chance to check out a sprawling desert stage that leads through canyons and past waterfalls as you put some distance between yourself and your opponents, all the while avoiding a swarm of cops on your tail.
NEED FOR SPEED HOT PURSUIT 2 SOUNDTRACK. ZIP
If the developers (Black Box on PS2, EA Seattle for Xbox and Cube) can nail that 60 framerate down, the game should zip clever spins.

Gamers with a few consoles on the rack will have some choices to make, with trade-offs and gains between the PS2 and new Xbox or GameCube versions.įirst off, the good news: the environments are looking nicer and nicer. Surprisingly, however, the already-shown PS2 game is significantly different from the other console revs. The title is almost here - EA had the latest rev up and revving at today's Camp EA event. If there's one race game that speed fans have been dying for, it's a follow-up to the killer PlayStation/PC ditch-the-cops game Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit.
